A long day!!!! 8-9

My sage green art room, the trim still needs doing.
The day started out pretty well.  I gave Larry his haircut...he has to maintain his handsome beauty at all times.  Just as we were cleaning up the cabinet guys showed up, nice and early...well at least it wasn't noon.  We told them the little things that needed attention, like leaving Larry a 3/4" hole under one cabinet so he could fish the lightings wire through it when they were done.  They went right to work, so armed with my two column list of things to get at H/D  we were off!

We started with the light fixtures which in all seriousness probably took us a couple of hours...we had to get 10 of them and deciding what would go where and the merits of this one over that one and could we alter this one to work over the sink...blah, blah, blah.  There would have been a bigger selection down in Roseville, but that would have just complicated the issue.  It isn't like we are decorating the Taj Mahal..we just want something tasteful that we can stand to look at for the next years.

Then it was counting out oodles of outlets, switches and plates to match.  We picked almond, which incidently look stunning because they disappear into our paint color choice and nothing freshens up a place that has had painted over outlets like new ones!

We trundled to plumbing and all over the place until we decided we needed to go eat and then come back.  So after loading up the truck it was across the street for lunch and then back we were at H/D.  This time we started at the lumber and while Larry was looking at 4"x12's one slipped off the rack and landed right on his painful arthritic foot knuckle...where the big toe bends at the foot.  OOHHHH, I don't know how he managed not to holler because I know it was drop to the ground pain.  So after he managed to walk we finished our shopping.  A list helps immensely!  It kept us on track and we didn't forget anything or waste time wandering back and forth

Larry was hurting pretty bad so I drove home...he got to see the American River canyon from the passengers perspective the first time.  So we get home, the cabinet crew was gone and very excitedly we go into the house to see the progress.  They are beautiful!  Just what I envisioned, UNTIL we got close and started examining the job....ach!

Refacing means cutting 1/4' think pieces of wood and like a massive jigsaw puzzle they glue them to the existing cabinets and they assured us that when they were done they would look just like custom.  The doors are wood with european hinges.  Larry pulled at a piece and it wasn't thoroughly stuck...not good and that was just the beginning...they drilled Larry's hole so small that the wire doesn't move (it is a fishing wire to pull the real wire through...but it needs to move).  I sooooo badly wanted this to go well, but I was standing next to the counter and looked down at one of the cabinet doors which was closed and I could see in the cabinet...ack.  I could go on, but I need to get to bed...ha ha ha.  It looks great from a distance, but just isn't going to hold up and they all assured us NO PROBLEM gluing to our existing cabinets...it seems to love the vinyl veneer.  The few pieces that they appeared to glue thoroughly and clamp and let dry long enough can't be budged and we won't talk about some of the ill fitting cuts that they went ahead and glued on!!!!

Larry with his sore foot was way, way mad...got right on the phone and told the office we were NOT happy, so at least they'll have a heads up before they get here tomorrow.  I am just hoping they do a good job fixing it all...why do so few have any pride in their work nowadays?

It was kind of overwhelming...we are working so hard to get this done and the "professionals" keep letting us down.  I decided to have a good cry and I shed exactly three tears so apparently it isn't anything worth crying over...ha ha ha.  I might add that there was a day or two this past week that I was a tetch hormonal.  After all these years together I think it rubs off on Larry...ha ha ha.  Only once have we ever had a bad cranky day at the same time...it was NOT pretty.  One or the other usually gives the drowning one a hand up, but when we both are floundering.....UGLY.

Larry has worked like the devil and being smart and having the testosterone in this partnership he is the plumber, the electrician, the carpenter and in between all this painting and prepping he has had all these other jobs to do.  I feel like a useless female mostly, so I go clean something or get something for him to save him a few steps, or rustle up some grub so we don't starve to death.

Larry had better not think he is going to be slacking with a hurt foot...this job doesn't carry workers comp. and I didn't exactly see what happened, I just took his word for it....ha ha ha!  I guess with no fires to call him away he thought he would try for some rest this way....he is going to give me the LOOK!

I told my friend Mary that when we get this done and all the flooring in we may wait a few days before getting our stuff just so we can run through all the rooms and roll around on the carpet and lay there and look up at the fresh paint and new light fixtures.  Because no rest for the weary...after the stuff is put away we'll be onto the outside.

Tomorrow is a new day!
