Day in LA, Part 2, LAPD Museum 6-6

After we stopped at the cemeteries office where Larry wanted to obtain some information we carried on to the LAPD Historical Societies Museum. Their web site is www.laphs.com where you can read more about them.
They have done an amazing job restoring the last old station…all others have been torn down and replaced with newer models. This station was of similar architecture to the one in Hollywood Division at the time of my Dad’s death…we were interested because we wanted to see the basement where Dad practiced the bagpipes. And no, the basement was not soundproof to the annoyance of many in the station when Dad practiced. It is amazing too that back then there was no a/c and just a few radiators for heat. It must have been miserable in the summer and wearing those heavy wool uniforms…ick.

The Executive Director Glynn Martin gave us a tour and like any museum it is a work in progress but they are doing a fine job. They have the jail in good shape, though in reality there were three bunks in each cell, and badge collections, uniforms, an extensive handcuff collection etc. and a historical timeline. We found it interesting that the LAPD had the first black and first woman officers and the first SWAT teams. There was a teeny memorial for Ian J Campbell, which interestingly and rather annoyingly lacked a picture of him, but like I said a work in progress. Toward the end of these stations use they were packed to the gills with all the personnel and expansion was needed.

We really enjoyed what we saw and could have spent more time there probably but we had a lunch date. So off to Hollywood Division where we hooked up with Captain Grimala…she was taking us all to lunch at Paramount Studios….part 3.
