Tumcumcari, NM 10-19

We rolled out of Stinnett, Texas this morning at 10:30. We headed south on 207 and then west on 60 which ran into business 40 through the north part of Amarillo. We stopped at a Super Walmart to get fuel, $2.33, worth the wait as it was the cheapest around. We parked in the parking lot for a stretch and food break. Business 40 was part of the old highway 66.

It was nice to be back in the wide open spaces and under the BIG sky. We hadn’t planned on coming back through this way and after being in New Mexico in the spring it is nice to also get to see it in the fall. They had quite a bit of weather a week or so ago so there was water in creeks that are usually dry. As we crossed into New Mexico we crossed into Mountain Time so we gained an hour today. Always nice to regain the hours lost.

We are in Tumcumcari, NM for the night. We got in here at 1:30 mt and traveled 176 miles. Our PA site tonight is $10 for full hook-ups and we have cable too. This area of New Mexico is full of pre-historic fossils; it was a popular hangout for the dinosaurs.

We took a walk down main street Tumcumcari which is old highway 66 and there are quite a few of the old motels and restaurants still around. It is warm here, in the low 70’s, ah the joys of being mobile!
