Ferry Day 9-20

We turned in last night with everything put away and ready to go. We just had to unplug and disconnect the water. Lar had already hooked-up the trailer up to the truck. We needed to leave early and we didn’t want to wake up the whole RV park.

We hit the road at 6:45. It had rained, thundered and lightning’d really hard last night after we went to bed. Fortunately for us it was done by morning. We headed down the road to the first ferry. We made the 7:30 boat with time to spare. The towns we went through were still pretty sleepy and I’m sure it wouldn’t have been so easy in the summer. We weren’t the biggest but we were the longest, a loaded cement truck got on the ferry with us and quite a few cars. This first ride was about 35 minutes from Hatteras Island to Ocracoke Island. Then we had a short 18 mile drive down the island to the second ferry that took us from Ocracoke Island to Cedar Island. The first ferry was free, the second one was $45 and was based on our length. The second ride took us about two and a quarter hours. The weather was gorgeous, even out on the water. No big wind and warm in the sun. We spent quite a bit of time just lounging in the truck and reading and then sunning and stretching on deck for awhile.

We hit land around noon and then kept heading south. We traveled 218 miles, plus 28 miles by boat. We are in another PA park and it is $8.50 for full hook-ups. We are in Sunset Beach which is on the coast south of Wilmington, NC, almost to the SC border. This RV park is laid out really weird and could use some maintenance, but it is quiet. The only drawback to this nice weather is we can’t really enjoy it because of the mosquitoes. We both hate insect repellent. Larry was setting up and said if he hadn’t been holding on to something the mosquitoes here would have lifted him off the ground. I figured a gross exaggeration, but then I saw one in the trailer…HUGE, like Alaska mosquitoes. The humidity is less down here for right now. We are fortunate that we are hitting some really nice weather. I know further north and inland it has gotten pretty cold. We aren’t quite ready for that yet. It gets to 78 in the evening and we start getting chilled…LOL!

So that was our grand adventure for today, for a short time we had water-front property! It felt kind of weird having our house traveling by boat. Don’t know what we are doing tomorrow!
